Bluigi, the 1979 Fiat Brava

on

This is the story of “Bluigi” the Fiat Brava that I bought new 37 years ago.  Many years ago when there were local Fiat dealers in the USA, selecting the new Fiat of your dreams was as easy as 1,2,3.  In the day you could select from Brava’s, (in 2 door, 4 door or wagon versions)  Strada’s,  Spyder 2000 or  X1/9’s.  The Fiat dealer at the time in Pocatello, Idaho was Paul’s Imports the local Pontiac-Cadillac-GMC dealer.  I originally ordered a green metallic Brava with a sunroof that had a tan interior. Waiting for the car I had ordered and being told that the dealership may not be able to get the car, I opted to buy the Blue Brava as it was in dealer stock.  I was sold the Blue Brava at the price of $5390.19,  with the sticker price being around $5600.  This was not a highly optioned car and it didn’t even come with a radio.  I didn’t elect to have the dealer installed air conditioning put in and made this my daily driver for about 5 years early on.  As a 22 year old railroad worker and car crazy…I drove the wheels off that car.  The car has been very reliable throughout its life and I feel very lucky for that.  It wasn’t until later in life that I heard of the horror stories of Fiat ownership.  After the first year I installed a radio,  new speakers and a very small amp,  the car had tunes!!!  I then needed new tires and I thought while I was at it…new wheels as well.  Shopping for wheels I installed a “Minilite” style wheel and BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires.  The next mod to the car was front and rear sway bars and Koni shocks, then Headers and a better exhaust.  The springs  that were purchased at the time of the early mods sat in a box for nearly 20 years until they were installed.  The car had a nearly 15 year slumber and was not driven at this time, but the desire to put the car back on the road came around in 2010.  After purchasing many new parts to keep the reliability going, the car was tested  in 2011.  The test drive was a 750 mile each way drive to a Fiat gathering in Oregon.  The drive went well and reminded me of how much I missed driving my car. Stay tuned for the next installment of where the car has been.
